MPI Research Expands Expertise and Support for Medical Device Research!

2005-05-24

In a continuous effort to improve research support for the medical device industry, MPI Research is proud to announce several major advances to our surgical program. While others are standing still in their programs, we continue to advance our capabilities in terms of equipment, personnel, facilities and outside technical expertise.

MPI Research is pleased to welcome Marc Penn, M.D., Ph.D. FACC of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation to our scientific advisory board as the Chief Scientific Advisor for Cardiovascular Services. Dr. Penn is well known in the interventional cardiology, acute myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure research arenas. He is currently on staff at the Cleveland Clinic as Director of the Experimental Animal Laboratory, Medical Director of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and Associate Director of the prestigious Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship program at the Cleveland Clinic.

Another significant improvement to the Department of Surgery is the construction of a new 15,000 ft2 swine facility. This new addition will be capable of housing over 250 swine of various size and strains. The new purpose-built structure is a premier climate controlled facility, which maximizes animal comfort and handling efficiency. This represents a 40% increase in swine housing for MPI Research, bringing the total swine capacity to over 600 when coupled with new swine facilities completed in 2004.

MPI Research is also proud to announce the completion of construction and GLP validations for our previously announced Plastic Embedding Laboratory. This new state-of-the-art lab enables us to embed tissues from the vasculature, bone, neural tissues and more. We are very pleased to be the only full service contract lab with a dedicated, on site, plastics embedding facility.

Dr. James Laveglia, Executive Vice President and Director of Research for MPI Research, commented, “We are constantly looking to improve the services we offer our Sponsors. We are very proud to have Dr. Penn join our team to help expand the surgical models we offer our sponsors developing cardiovascular devices and therapies. His expertise adds a new level of excitement to our leading cardiac research services. Combining our new fluoroscopy imaging equipment and plastics lab, with Dr. Penn’s expertise and insight, is an important step forward for our cardiovascular research support programs.“
