| MPI Research announces
the ability to conduct a Gastric Emptying
Assay in Rats! |
In an effort to help Sponsors meet the ICH
S7A guidelines for follow up testing, MPI
Research announced their ability to conduct
a validated gastric emptying assay in rats.
The validation study evaluated the effects
of two positive control articles on gastric
emptying. Following administration of the
positive control articles, the animals received
1.5 ml of phenol red meal. The animals were
euthanized approximately 20 minutes after
the phenol red meal was administered at which
time the stomachs were analyzed for phenol
red content. The samples were read spectrophotometrically
and compared to a standard curve to determine
the concentration of phenol red remaining
in the stomachs. In comparison to the control
group, there was a decrease in gastric emptying
with the administration of CCK-8 and an increase
in gastric emptying with metoclopramide.
James Laveglia, Ph.D., Executive Vice President
and Director of Research, commented, “We
are rapidly expanding our capabilities in
Safety Pharmacology. In addition to conducting
cardiovascular telemetry studies in rats,
dogs and monkeys, we are expanding our pharmacology
capabilities and have the ability to conduct
studies for neurological, respiratory and
renal evaluation.”
MPI Research exists to provide comprehensive
non-clinical research that meets the requirements
of pharmaceutical, animal health and chemical
companies as well as governmental agencies
as we partner together to bring safer, healthier
products to the world. MPI employees specialize
in a wide variety of scientific disciplines
including toxicology, pharmacology, metabolism,
pathology, clinical pathology, reproductive
and developmental biology, veterinary science,
