| MPI Research Provides
Valuable Educational Resources to Prestigious
Veterinary Colleges and Universities |
In addition to the highly successful Veterinary
Pathologist Residency program with Michigan
State University, MPI Research’s Surgical
Services Department has partnered with Baker
College, Drexel University, and Michigan
State University to provide internships in
the field of veterinary surgical research
and veterinary care. The internship program
provides students with hands on opportunity
to further develop their education while
working towards a degree as a licensed veterinary
technician or other veterinary programs as
well as majors in zoology and biology. The
trained participants perform functions such
as pre and postoperative animal care, anesthesia
administration, incision assessments and
assisting in veterinary physical examinations.
Participants not only gain valuable surgical
and clinical experience, but also gain a
strong appreciation for the operation of
a GLP contract research facility. Interns
are exposed to the importance of Standard
Operating Procedures and GLP documentation.
The interns participate in IACUC committee
meetings, animal enrichment programs, and
are exposed to clinical pathology and necropsy
procedures. To date, six individuals have
joined MPI Research as interns who worked
along side the MPI Research surgical and
clinical care veterinarians for durations
ranging from 3 weeks to 6 months. The internship
program has developed into a very successful
endeavor to advance the education of future
veterinarians and veterinary technicians,
while providing valuable assistance to the
surgical and animal care staff at MPI Research.
Dr. Rhonda Pung, D.V.M., Manager of Clinical
Medicine and Surgical Services for MPI Research,
commented, “We are extremely pleased
to provide these veterinary and veterinary
technician students with a real world environment
to develop their surgical and clinical skills.
We at MPI Research feel that having such
prestigious educational institutions as Drexel,
Baker, and Michigan State entrusting their
students with us is a strong endorsement
of the quality and professionalism of our
Surgical and Clinical Care programs. We look
forward to continuing this program for many
years to come.”
MPI Research exists to provide comprehensive
non-clinical research that meets the requirements
of pharmaceutical, medical device, animal
health and chemical companies as well as
governmental agencies as we partner together
to bring safer, healthier products to the
world. MPI Research employees specialize
in a wide variety of scientific disciplines
including toxicology, pharmacology, metabolism,
pathology, clinical pathology, reproductive
and developmental biology, veterinary science,
neuroscience, experimental therapeutics,
immunotoxicology, analytical chemistry, computer
science, regulatory science, and statistics.
