MPI RESEARCH Expands Efficacy Testing with the Addition of Cancer Research Models

Once again in response to Sponsor requests, MPI Research has added additional services. This new addition in the area of Xenograft Tumor Efficacy Models is led by Dr. Kate Lane. Dr. Lane received her doctorate degree from the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom then spent three years of post-doctorate work at Tufts University in Boston. Dr. Lane focused her doctorate and post-doctorate studies on the pharmacology and endocrinology of hormone dependent cancers. After her post-doctorate work, she spent several years with Bristol-Myers Squibb Corporation’s oncology drug discovery unit evaluating in vivo, anti-tumor efficacy, of novel chemotherapeutic and cytotoxic agents. Dr. Lane has extensive experience in all standard murine and human xenograft models as well as other newer technologies.

MPI Research now has the ability to conduct efficacy testing for human tumors, derived from multiple cell lines, ranging from solid non-metastatic tumors to metastatic cancer models. In addition, the new “hollow fiber” screening technology, developed by the National Cancer Institute, will be available as a primary in vivo screen prior to xenograft evaluation. Utilizing immunocompromised mice, MPI Research now has the ability to aid customers in screening cancer drugs in early non-clinical testing. MPI Research has developed and invested in a cell culture facility to support this and other new services.

Dr. James Laveglia, Executive Vice President and Director of Research, commented, “We are extremely pleased to offer this service to our clients to help them make more informed decisions on selecting drug candidates for continued non-clinical testing. This project once again illustrates the nimble and flexible nature of MPI Research. After more than a dozen inquiries by sponsors earlier this year, we decided to move forward with this additional service. In the space of three months, we moved from concept to implementation and are now running studies for sponsors. In addition, with Dr. Lane’s experience, we have an expert who can lead this group and provide customized service for our sponsors in this early drug discovery area.”

MPI Research exists to provide comprehensive non-clinical research that meets the requirements of pharmaceutical, animal health and chemical companies as well as governmental agencies as we partner together to bring safer, healthier products to the world. MPI employees specialize in a wide variety of scientific disciplines including toxicology, pharmacology, metabolism, pathology, clinical pathology, reproductive and developmental biology, veterinary science, neuroscience, analytical chemistry, computer science, regulatory science, and statistics.
